The Winery:
Tin Barn started as a partnership between three friends, and has grown to five. It was founded in 2000, with the first commercial wines produced in 2002. The winery is located in an industrial area surrounded by vineyards in southern Sonoma, where many other wineries have their home as well. Tasting is done in a small room next to the cellaring facility, separate from the rest of the winery.
|
The Vineyards:
Grapes are sourced from six vineyards located in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. One of these, called Coryelle Fields, is located on Tin Barn Road and is the source of the winery’s Syrah grapes as well as the Tin Barn name. There are two Zinfandel vineyards; one in the Russian River area and the second in the Chiles Valley region of the Napa Valley. The winery’s famous Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Sonoma Valley and the Chiles Valley region of Napa. The Syrah grapes come from the Sonoma Coast.
|
The Wines:
The estate produces two Zinfandels, one from their Napa Valley Vineyard and the other from their Russian River Vineyard. Tasting the two side-by-side is an excellent example of the impacts of terroir on a finished wine. Their Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a great tannic structure, while leaving a lingering impression of great black fruit, vanilla, and bitter chocolate on the palate. |
The Winemaker:
Michael Lancaster is the winemaker and general partner at Tin Barn Vineyards. He attended the University of California, Davis in the graduate enology program before going to work for Gloria Ferrer and then Quail Ridge before starting Tin Barn.
