The Winery: The Robert Stemmler brand was originated by German born Robert Stemmler after discovering his true passion was for Burgundian style Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Stemmler brand was purchased by the Racke family when Mr. Stemmler retired some 20 years ago. The winery offers two labels, the Robert Stemmler and Donum Estate brands. Located in Los Carneros off Ramal Road, there is no tasting offered at the estate. Wine tasting is offered off-site in the City of Sonoma and wines can be purchased at the estate's websites. The tasting room in Sonoma offers the wines of several small local wineries in one facility.
The Vineyards: The Donum Estate, which has 120 acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, was begun by the Racke family in 2001. The estate is the prime source for both the Robert Stemmler and Donum Estate wines. The 20 acre Ferguson block on the Estate is where the oldest vines are planted, dating to 1974. These grapes are the source of the estate’s hardest to find, premium wines. The vineyard is sustainably farmed under the direction of winegrower, Anne Moller-Racke.
The Wines: The winery is famous for its incredibly complex, intense vineyard designated Pinot Noirs created in a Burgundian style. The wines are known for their ability to reflect back the minerality of the soils and rich fruit of the region. The estate produces a full-bodied Chardonnay with bright stone fruit, hints of honeysuckle, and just a bit of stony earthiness..
The Winemaker: Kenneth Juhasz graduated college in North Carolina and from there he went to the Williamette Valley to work with Pinot Noir before coming to the Donum Estate/Robert Stemmler Winery.
