The Winery:
Francis Mahoney bought land in Carneros in 1972, and opened the winery, originally called Carneros Creek, in 1973. In 2001 he sold the Carneros Creek brand and began Mahoney Vineyards. The first wines were produced under that label in 2005. The actual winemaking facility was sold to Michael Mondavi Family in 2006. Wines can be tasted and purchased at the tasting room Taste at Oxbow, 708 First St., Napa, ca, 94559. Phone number 707-265-9600 or at the winery website.
The Vineyards: The estate owns 160 acres of vineyards in both Napa & Sonoma Counties. The Las Brisas Vineyard is in the windswept flats by the southwestern Sonoma side where they grow Vermentino, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Albariño, as well as Pinot Noir. At the Mahoney Ranch Vineyards the estate grows Pinot on the hillsides, Chardonnay in the heavier clays and Syrah on the west facing slopes.
The Wines:
The winery started with the varietals the Carneros region is famous for, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. After trips to both Italy and Spain, the winery added Montepulciano, Tempranillo, Syrah, and Vermentino. The winery specializes in small batch lots of vineyard designated wines.
The Winemaker:
The winemaker at Mahoney is Ken Foster, who came to the winery from David Bruce in Santa Cruz, and did his undergraduate studies in geology.
