The Winery:
MacRostie Winery is located in a industrial building not far from the town of Sonoma. It is a very modern, almost cavernous facility with large steel tanks and oak barrels around the outside, and tasting in the center. The winery started in 1987 with the production of a Carneros Chardonnay, and then added Pinot Noir and Merlot from the same region in the early 1990s. Following quickly on the heels of these successes was the development of the Wildcat Mountain Vineyard property, and the creation of the current winery facility in Sonoma.

The Vineyards: MacRostie produces wines from the estate Wildcat Mountain Vineyard, located on the Sonoma Coast, as well as selected vineyards in Los Carneros. They also purchase Cabernet Sauvignon from the Napa Valley.

The Wines: Their newly released single block Syrah, from the Wildcat Mountain Vineyard, has a great depth of flavor, nuances of vanilla and oak, some good black fruit and blueberries, and a nice full body. They create Pinot Noirs from different local regions to allow for the tasting of the impact of terroir on grapes and wines.

The Winemaker: Kevin Holt began his wine career in sales and marketing. A student of law originally, he developed a love of the wine industry, and went on to study viticulture and enology as a graduate student at the University of California, Davis.
