The Winery:
The Larson Family Winery is built on the 101 acres of land that has been in the family since 1899 and is truly a part of California history. The farm, located on Sonoma Creek, once was the farthest north navigable point, and was once the spot where the steamboats from San Francisco would dock. The Larsons have managed to preserve the wild west feel of the spot, offering tasting in a redwood barn that is decorated with period memorabilia celebrating the place’s colorful history. A dirt road past the winery ends at the parking area of part of the Napa-Sonoma Marshes Wildlife Area.
|
The Vineyards:
The 70 acres of vineyards started with 40 acres of Chardonnay in 1977. The vineyards now surround the Captain’s House, an 1800s four bedroom, two bath home that sits on the winery grounds. The house is available for nightly lodging if you are looking for a place to stay for the weekend.
|
The Wines:
Larson Ranch specializes in bright, crisp Chardonnay with just a bit of oak and butter and soft, smoky Pinot Noirs. Among their large selection of varietals, they also offer a very light and fruity Pinot Noir Rosé which makes a great food wine.
|
The Winemaker:
The winemakers at Larson are Tom Larson, founder of the winery, and Carolyn Craig. Both are graduates of the University of California, Davis.
