The Winery:
The Kirkland Ranch is built on the site of a working cattle ranch that has its roots in the days of General Vallejo and the original land grants. Although not located in Los Carneros, it close enough that the views from the verandah go to Los Carneros and beyond. The tasting and winery facility is done in the style of a rustic log ranch home. The entry level gift shop has a unique western theme definitely worth a visit.
|
The Vineyards:
The original three acre vineyard test plot was planted in 1985 and has grown to 150 acres and 13 grape varietals. The grapes were originally sold to the some of the larger Napa & Sonoma wineries prior to the completion of the winery. The winery employs, sustainable farming practices including the use of predatory insects to kill pests and the growing of cover crops between the rows of grapes to encourage other insects to leave the grapes and vines alone.
|
The Wines:
The region is a little warmer than its neighboring vineyards in Los Carneros, and as such makes a few warmer region wines, such as a Sangiovese and Viognier. They also make a sweet Rosé from the Sangiovese, and a Late Harvest Viognier. The winery also produces the local stars, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Chardonnay.

The Winemaker:
The winemaker at Kirkland is Rick Tracy who completed his post graduate work at University of California, Davis Viticulture & Enology dept. He has worked in positions as a vineyard manager, general manager of winemaking at Austin Hills Vineyards, Louis Honig Cellars, Folie Deux, and RH Phillips prior to coming to Kirkland Ranch.
