The Winery:
Built into the top of the highest point in Carneros, the winery and tasting room facility takes on an almost medieval fortress appearance from a distance. However, that impression dies quickly once you ascend the stairs to the entrance of the tasting room. The facility is done in an ultra modern style with expansive patios to take in the incredible view of the San Pablo Bay.
|
The Vineyards:
The estate has vineyard holdings on both sides of the Mayacama Mountain Range, located in the Alexander Valley and Carneros AVAs. The 352 acre estate surrounds the winery facility, including 150 acres of producing vineyards planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The Alexander Valley property is 409 acres with 300 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot & Tempranillo.
|
The Wines:
Artesa takes great care to plant the right grapes in the right terroir; an appellation approach to winemaking. Originally devoted to sparkling wines, the winery expanded the facility to produce still wines in 1999, and now specializes in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
|
The Winemaker:
Dave Dobson, the winemaker at Artesa, has a Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from John Hopkins University and studied enology within the masters of Food Science program at the University of California, Davis. He worked for Rutherford Hill and Kendall Jackson prior to coming to Artesa in 2005.
